Summer Fundraising
The Summer is a brilliant time to fundraise – the sunshine, longer days and school holidays mean there’s much more scope to get creative and think outside the box!
You don’t have to join an organised event – you can do your own thing and make it as big or small as you like! Organise a garden party, a picnic, set your own endurance challenge, have a stall at the Summer Fete or like our fundraising officer Victoria’ s children, run a lemonade stand!
Run the Vitality London 10,000 with us for World Duchenne Awareness Day
The 7th of September every year marks Duchenne Awareness Day. The 7th day of the 9th month for the 79 exons in the dystrophin gene. This year, the theme is ‘Duchenne: Breaking Barriers’ and we want to join the global Duchenne community in raising as much awareness as we can. We are planning to have our biggest team yet taking part in the Vitality London 10,000 on Sunday 24th September as part of putting Duchenne in the spotlight for Duchenne Awareness Day and Action Duchenne’s National Director Florence Boulton is will be part of the team! She’s never run 10km before and knows it’ll be hard to fit into her busy life. But she’s determined to raise money and awareness for the Duchenne community and would love you all to join the Action Duchenne Team:
“I am incredibly proud to be raising money for our charity; because the amazing work that we fund could help change and even save the lives of seriously ill children, young people, and adults living with Duchenne from across the UK.”
Run with us to remove the limitations that those living with Duchenne experience. Fundraise to give them the ability to participate in community life and activities. Join us as we strive to create an inclusive society and build a better future.
It’s a great way to take on a challenge as a team – run with your work-mates, your flatmates, your pub quiz team or your football team. Or just as a group of friends who fancy having some fun for a good cause!
A huge thank you
We have so many amazing people in our community who are doing brilliant things to fundraise for us and we want to shout about how incredible you all are!
SinFin Sharks Football Club
The ShinFin Sharks Football Club have raised money for Action Duchenne all year and thanks to generous donations at their presentation evening, they made an amazing £1100 for us!
Lifting the weight of a Hercules!
RAF Falcon and Duchenne dad Sgt Doug McAll lifted the weight of a C130J Hercules, completing 344 deadlifts at 100kg in 53 minutes 17seconds! He raised £1046.51! Like Doug, coming up with your very own challenge is a great way to motivate yourself and raise much-needed funds and awareness about our vital work.
Set up a stall for Action Duchenne
A big thank you to Supriya, Vishal, Siya and Arvin, who have been doing a lot to raise awareness for us. On Saturday 1st July, they attended the Disability Learning Carnival in Croydon.
We met some lovely people, and it was good to get Action Duchenne noticed; many people came up to us, and we met a family whose nephew/grandson has Duchenne. The kids did so well to be at this event and to help and enjoy their day too!”
Thank you so much to Cookham Dean CE Primary School for letting us have a charity stall at their school fete. Lots of money was raised from the exceptional handmade and homemade items on sale – jam, marmalade, hedgehog houses, tissue holders, face scrubbers, lavender bags, reusable cutlery rolls, scrunchies and bags!
One step at a time
We have had lots of people taking on different walking challenges, all of them raising brilliant amounts of money and vital awareness for us. We are inspired by everyone who takes on an endurance challenge for us, no matter what the distance!
Chris and Martyn walked an incredible 100km in 21 hours, completing the Lake District Ultra Challenge! Chris tells us how he found the motivation to keep going.
It was tough and painful but worth it, and comparing my temporary pain and discomfort to those living with DMD and their families, it pales into insignificance. Thank you for Action Duchenne’s support before the challenge, and I appreciated the good luck postcard. My wife snuck it into my luggage, and I found it on the night before. Little things like that reminded me of the reason I was doing it rather than just focusing on what I was doing.”
Chris Long also took on an awe inspiring Ultra distance, completing the Jurassic Coast Ultra Marathon for us.
On Saturday 24th June, a group of Janus employees took part in the Guisborough Three Peaks Circular. They covered 14.6km and raised £1215!
And a group of 10 people from Lion House Dental Practice completed a 16 mile walk in 5 hours on the hottest day of the year so far! They were inspired by Levi, who lives with Duchenne and Levi and his mum Clare greeted them at the end of the walk. They raised a fantastic £1500.87.
“This charity means a lot to our practice and we really enjoyed raising funds and awareness for this amazing charity!”
Drew, Molly and Zak
On 27th June Molly and her family organised a 12 hour indoor bike ride fundraiser at Ritson Lodge Care Home. Molly said:
“We can’t thank everyone enough for today. We raised over £420 for Action Duchenne. We’re so grateful for everyone at Ritson Lodge Care Home for arranging this, and to Potters Resort for bringing their mascot, everyone that joined us today, donated and helped spread the word! It was so amazing and we can’t believe the amount we managed to raise.”
All money raised was put onto the families Drews Way Walk fundraiser page. The walk, which is the second they have organised, will take place on the 29th July and is along Caister and Yarmouth beach. If you would like to join for the walk please contact Molly.
Let’s Party!
Why not combine a celebration with a fundraiser and make a night of it? We want to say a big THANK YOU to the Ambler family for asking for donations to Action Duchenne in celebration of Jake’s 21st Birthday. They raised a fantastic £763 and had a brilliant time!
Match it!
In March 2023, Ruth Talyor, whose son Max lives with Duchenne, and her dedicated team of friends and family held a charity dinner dance to raise funds and awareness for Action Duchenne. The event was a huge success, with sold out tickets, a raffle, auction and live band. Since the event took place, Ruth has been working hard behind the scenes to maximise the amount raised through match funding, and Santander agreed to do this and match funded the entire amount raised. This is an amazing way to make the most of a fundraising opportunity, and means that the total amount raised for Action Duchenne is an incredible £54,528.58. This extraordinary amount of money, alongside the awareness that the event raised, will truly make a real impact and we are so grateful both to Ruth and her team and to Santander Foundation.
