A blog about our amazing and official marathon finishers, Rody and Terrie.
As Community Fundraising and Support Officer I support people who take on a challenge event or a community fundraiser for Action Duchenne. I am so very lucky our supporters are such wonderful, friendly and inspiring people. I really enjoy getting to know each and every person. So it’s my pleasure to share a little about our marathon runners this year.
Rody’s Marathon
Rody is down to earth, humble and with a great sense of humour. Despite loathing running and sharing with me that he wasn’t in his most optimal health, anyone could see the sheer determination to run those 26.2 miles for his nephews absolutely shining through.
His partner Tasha joined myself and our Head of Programmes, Sadia, at our cheer point at Waterloo Bridge. It was such a pleasure to meet her and spend time with her. When we saw Rody at 24 miles, he looked focused, cool and calm, despite the fact he had had a fall earlier due to another runner crossing in front of him.
On meeting him at the post race reception along The Strand (thank you to MDUK for letting our runners use this) he was visibly tired but still smiling. He said the best bit for him was running round the Cutty Sark and just to see the finish line was wonderful.
When Rody spoke to me about his nephews, Alfie and Arthur, I could tell how fond he is of them and the special connection they have. Fun, humorous, supportive and loving. Rody is certainly a wonderful Uncle.
Congratulations Rody – you did it!
Terrie’s Marathon
At the end of July this year one of our marathon runners sadly had to drop out. So I reached out to Terrie to see if she would like to run in their place. I remember how she was absolutely thrilled and took on the challenge wholeheartedly. Her youngest daughter Georgia, was also running but for MDUK. Both were running in memory of a wonderful son and brother, Jordan.
Running around the Cutty Sark followed by Tower Bridge were both lovely moments, the sun had come out, the crowds were amazing and it was just a fantastic atmosphere
Terrie, Action Duchenne London Marathon Runner 2022
When we saw Terrie and Georgia at mile 24 we gave them a big hug. Georgia’s knee had nearly given up, and later on after the finish line gave up completely. Terrie shared with me that she was really worried she wouldn’t get her to the finish line, but was so pleased they did. This just shows how amazing Terrie is, during completing a marathon she was also supporting her daughter to complete it too. Along with this being quite simply just what mothers do I also believe this shows the special bonds that exist within families and friends when someone they love lives, or has lived with Duchenne.
Well done Terrie, and Georgia! You did it!
We could tell by the amount of support Terrie and Rody had in donations just how amazing they both are, because so many people believed in them. Thank you to each person who donated to support them, and us in our vision to make sure lives are no longer limited by Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
